If you’ve ever shopped for insulation or gotten an energy audit, you’ve run into the term “R-value.” It gets thrown around a lot, but most Portland homeowners are never told what it actually means for their house — or how much they really need. Getting this number right is the difference between an attic that quietly saves you money every month and one that lets your heating and cooling dollars drift straight out through the roof. Here’s a plain-English guide to R-value and what the right target looks like for a home in the Portland metro.
R-value is simply a measure of how well a material resists heat flow. The higher the number, the better the material slows heat from moving through it. In winter, that means keeping the warmth you’re paying for inside your living space instead of letting it escape into a cold attic. In summer, it means keeping attic heat from radiating down into your bedrooms. Every insulation type — fiberglass, cellulose, spray foam — carries an R-value per inch, so the total R-value of your attic depends on both the material and how deep it’s installed.
Portland sits in a mixed-marine climate, and the U.S. Department of Energy recommends attic insulation in the range of R-38 to R-60 for homes in our region. Practically speaking, R-38 is the floor you want to hit, and R-49 to R-60 is where you’ll see the most comfort and efficiency, especially in older homes or those with rooms directly under the roofline. Many Portland-area attics we look at are sitting at R-19 or less — sometimes just a thin, compressed layer left over from decades ago. That’s roughly half of what current standards call for, which is why so many homeowners feel drafts, uneven temperatures, and stubbornly high energy bills.
Because R-value depends on thickness, it helps to know what the numbers look like in your attic. Blown-in cellulose delivers roughly R-3.5 per inch, so reaching R-49 takes about 14 inches of material. Loose-fill fiberglass runs a little lower per inch and needs slightly more depth. A quick way to spot-check your own attic: if your insulation is level with or below the tops of the floor joists, you almost certainly don’t have enough. Insulation should sit well above the joists — often a foot or more of fluffy material across the whole attic floor. If you can see wood framing peeking through, heat is escaping right there.
Piling on insulation only works if the attic is properly air sealed first. Gaps around can lights, plumbing stacks, the attic hatch, and top plates let air bypass the insulation entirely, and even a perfect R-60 blanket can’t stop air that’s flowing around it. That’s why a quality insulation job pairs air sealing with the right depth of material. Ventilation matters too — baffles at the eaves keep airflow moving so insulation stays dry and effective through our wet Pacific Northwest winters. Done together, these steps let your R-value actually perform the way the number promises.
Bringing an underinsulated attic up to R-49 or R-60 is one of the highest-return improvements you can make, and you may not have to shoulder the full cost. Eligible customers of utilities like PGE, Pacific Power, and NW Natural can tap Energy Trust of Oregon incentives, which for attic insulation generally run around $1.25 to $1.50 per square foot. On a typical Portland attic, that adds up quickly.
